Opie’s Barbecue, a Lake Travis Restaurant in Spicewood has the lakes best BBQ. Upon walking through Opie’s front door you will immediately be confronted by a gleaming black metal barbeque pit. If it’s your first visit, you’ll probably think to yourself that this behemoth is a little too clean and a little too showy to contain top-quality barbecue. But just wait until the lid is lifted, and you’ll begin to quiver a bit in the presence of a beautiful bounty of meaty goodness.

Opie’s is a pick-your-meat-from-the-show-pit kind of joint, and once you recover from your swoon, an attendant is standing by to assist you in your selections. We recommend getting the brisket, a little bit of both the regular and jalapeño sausage, half a rack of sweet-and-spicy baby back ribs, and one of Opie’s enormous pork chops (there are also pork spareribs, pork loin, pulled pork, beef ribs, and chicken). Proceed to the counter for slicing, weighing, and paying, and get some sides while you’re at it. The spicy corn is great, as is the decadent tater tot casserole (and beans are gratis).

Find a table in the large dining room and ready yourself for moist and tender brisket with a perfectly seasoned black bark, lovely baby backs, hearty sausage, and the absolutely stunning (in both appearance and flavor) pork chop. All are sublimely smokey, just the way the good Lord intended. If you’re still conscious after this bonanza, look for the off-menu Coca-Cola cake.

  1. Tater tot casserole and spicy creamer corn are amazing!!!! Brisket is good too.

  2. I met the owners of Opie’s and they invited me to try their restaurant. All I can say is get there early. When they run out of meat, they close. This place has world class BBQ. I brought a local legend in there with me, Dick Schieffer. I didn’t have to tell him twice, he knew exactly where this place was. We both left with BBQ all over our faces haha…. Amazing experience….

  3. Got BBQ to go, I’m aways skeptical about eating BBQ out because it’s expensive and most places cannot do it right. Well this place gets it, ribs we’re great and the sliced brisket was absolutely amazing, highly recommend!

  4. I’m here to say thank you Opie’s BBQ for supporting our traveler Pedro from Brazil. They were Very kind to bring great food to our boy big thank you and I will visit you soon. Thanks so much Seth. God bless your business.

  5. This place rocks. Love the way they roll. Pick out your meat from an open pit. Free all you can eat pinto and butter beans that have been cooking all day long. It’s almost as good as Cooper’s in Llano but way closer to Austin. Definitely check this place out if you’re in the Spicewood area.

  6. I enjoyed this meal so much. I’m still thinking about it. The banana pudding was the best. We were looking at the t shirts. Struck up a conversation with Todd (owner), it felt like I was talking to an old friend. I can’t wait to go back.

  7. My family and I always love coming out to opies, food is always on point!!!!
We love seeing the new merch they have out every time we visit!

    Trinity V , 1 year ago
  8. Hard to catch them opened since I moved out of town. They only make so much and once they sell out, they are closed for the day. But One of the best briskets I have ever had.

    Amanda S. , 1 year ago
  9. Might be our favorite BBQ anywhere. It might be some of the best food in the world in my opinion. This time we had jalapeno cheddar sausage, baby back ribs, and tater tots casserole which is just next level. I’m going to try and recreate it at home. The complimentary beans are fantastic, so soft and luxurious. The sauce is bright and tangy, a perfect compliment to the rich smoky meats. I’ll be dreaming about this meal for a while. And their whole jalapenos are great too!

  10. Love the BBQ here!! Very Texan. Great sides to go along with the bbq.

  12. Everything about this place is what I expect of my home state. Great food, friendly staff, and feels like you belong with everyone there no matter what. I always get a good laugh just talking to the staff throughout the order process.

  13. Deep in the heart of Texas, Opie’s BBQ is smoking some of the best brisket you’ll ever taste. The chicken, turkey, and ribs are all incredible. Do yourself a favor, and don’t leave without the banana pudding.

  14. There are so many wonderful BBQ places in Austin but this is my favorite. Their turkey has made me a believer. Their ribs are some of the best I’ve ever had. And the tater tot casserole is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever tasted. Friendly staff, clean and relaxed atmosphere, and the owner is a gentleman. Definitely stop in!

    Michael-Paul C. , 1 year ago
  15. Got a recommendation for this place and have to pass it on. We weren’t even very hungry but the guy made it sound so good. Usually either the bbq place has good meats or good sides this place has both. Best turkey I have ever had. Tater tot casserole is one of the greatest sides I’ve ever eaten.

  16. Brisket melted in your mouth. Everything was delicious!

  17. Nice place with plenty of room and live music. Brisket was excellent, but pork chops were dry. Friendly staff.

  18. Comfortable atmosphere, delicious, tender Brisket with an exceptional bark.
    Stop in, you’ll like it!

  19. I am a local and have been coming here since I was a boy. This BBQ joint is easily ranked in the top 10 best BBQ joints in the state of Texas.

  20. Soooooo yummy!! Amazing sides, and large variation of sides to choose from that are super good. Free beans are served family style in the center of restaurant, so save room for that when buying sides. Also strawberry cake is a must try!!

    Veronica B. , 1 year ago
  21. Great BBQ, arrived late in the day and were afraid they would be sold out of most of it. Luckily, we were able to try a variety from ribs, turkey, jalapeno sausage and even some brisket. It was all very good with the favorites being brisket (of course) then the turkey. Not to mention the blackberry cobbler, yum!

    Kendra K. , 1 year ago
  22. Maybe the best BBQ in Texas? If not, then at least competing. Excellent all-around experience. Amazing food, super nice staff, ample seating, fast service. The brisket comes in lean and moist variants, of which we chose moist (auuuuggghh so good). The sides were all outstanding. Their chorizo was spot on. Not much else to say – just awesome BBQ.

    Nick B. , 1 year ago
  23. Best bbq and restaurant layout ever. Traveler from Minnesota. Even had a helicopter land on the adjacent field, coming in to have lunch. Can’t say enough about this outstanding Texas bbq. Even the sides were outstanding.

    Jeffrey C. , 2 years ago
  24. Best BBQ in the world. Meat, sauce, sides, dessert, white beans. Tried them all and Opie’s blows them away. I run into folks all over the world while I’m wearing my Opies hat and they exclaim, “Best barbecue ever!”

    Dave , 2 years ago
  25. Spicy corn. So good. Excellent sides here. Good meats. And all the butter beans and baked beans you can eat. Often have live music. Nice staff. Plenty of parking. Really good place to enjoy Texas BBQ. Those butter beans are delicious btw.

  26. Opie’s is the best BBQ in TEXAS! I have tried almost all of them and nothing tops Opie’s IMO. Their sweet and spicy ribs are insane as well as the brisket, tat casserole and spicy corn. On top of the best BBQ around their team is so friendly! We always look forward to seeing Claudia and the cashier (young blonde woman) who are both always so cheerful and kind!

PS. I did take out catering for my baby shower and the guests LOVED it! Super easy process would recommend for any group gathering.

  27. If you like bbq this is a great place to stop. The customer service is great and every time I drive by the place is packed. If I lived in the area I would be there at least once a week! The spicy corn is excellent and the potato casserole would make the menu at thanksgiving in my house. I’ve tried a couple different meat options and I will say that the pork loin is great, super juicy and tender. I’ll definitely be back.

    Kristy C. , 2 years ago
  28. Came here after a long day at Krause Springs, and it hit the spot! We got the jalapeño cheese sausage, brisket, Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and green beans. Everything was excellent.

    Cori B. , 2 years ago
  29. The barbecue here is amazing. We got brisket and baby back ribs and loved it. They also have brisket sandwiches, and the price for everything was very fair. I recommend this to anyone looking for some traditional Texan barbecue.

  30. Great Texas BBQ
I had brisket, pork loin, and jalapeno sausage, potato salad, and beans
I especially like the lima beans. Would come back and bring some home, too.

    sharon b. , 2 years ago
  31. This was hands-down the best BBQ we had in Texas. The brisket was great, the baby back ribs were tender and well-seasoned. For sides, we had the butter beans, classic potato salad, and tater-tot casserole. All were good! Also tried the banana pudding, which had more of a mousse-like texture but was quite tasty (and very sweet). You order at the counter, service is very efficient, and you are left alone to enjoy your meats. Highly recommend!

    Sandra G. , 2 years ago
  32. The brisket is so tender and not to salty on the crust. The sides are the best of all the bbq places we have been. I love the tater tot casserole and cobbler. It’s over a hr. Drive to get there but it’s always worth the drive.

    Gunner , 2 years ago
  33. Great meat and sides. Love their brisket, pulled pork, cream corn, and tater tot casserole. Huge place with plenty of room to find seats.

    Josh , 2 years ago
  34. best ribs west of the Pedernales. I’m not sure if the sweet and spicy or dry rub are better… try both.
them butter beans are also killer, and the spicy corn is off the charts.
I love the rustic atmosphere and ample portions.
    My favorite BBQ joint.

    FR W , 2 years ago
  35. Opies serves very good BBQ and sides. Famous for the butter beans and over the top cobblers. Peach cobbler is my personal favorite.

  36. Easily the BEST BBQ in Central Texas. These Are Some of the Best People You Will Ever Meet. Todd and Kristen Know How to Deliver Great Food and a Staff that Makes Sure You Are Happy and Full. Keep Up the Good Work Guys.

  37. My husband and I, along with some friends was driving home from Galveston and we stopped at this barbecue place for a meal. The food was exceptionally tasty! The meat we ate was tender, tasty, and falling off the bone. The service was great, and the set was different from any other restaurant I’ve been at! I think we will make an effort to go visit them again for a good meal..

    Cat M. , 2 years ago
  38. One of my favorite classic Texas barbecue spots. They have baked beans and lima beans with ham complimentary. The moist brisket was absolutely amazing…. Everything on the menu is delicious but they do sell out around 2 p.m. sometimes so try to get there for lunch.

Recently I have tried some of the blackberry cobbler and just fell in love!

Definitely worth stopping in if you’re in the area!

    Dean C. , 2 years ago
  39. Place has incredible BBQ. Sweet and Spicy ribs really stood out but the brisket and even the chicken were excellent as well. We didn’t have cobbler but from the looks of it I’m sure they were delicious as well!

    Mark C. , 2 years ago
  40. Some of the best BBQ in Central Texas, it ain’t cheap but man is it good !!! I think it’s way better than Coopers in Llano and it’s as least as good as Black’s in Lockhart maybe better. I’ve been eating here for over 20 years since they were at their old location and I’ve never been disappointed at the deliciousness of the food. Only problem with it is now a lot of other people have learned how good it is and it gets busy, they’ll even sometimes run out of brisket

    Lazurite D. , 2 years ago
  41. By far, the BEST BBQ in Texas. The staff is great, and the atmosphere screams you’ve arrived in Texas. The line can literally wrap around the building on holidays and weekends, so get there early. But is it worth the wait? Absolutely!!

    Jenn B. , 2 years ago
  42. The brisket was delicious my husband said it was the best he’s ever had. The ribs were really good as well. I had never tried pecan cobbler before, it was amazing, highly recommended!

    Charity F. , 2 years ago
  43. Great experience. Everything top notch. Everything. This is a place I’ll take folks from out of town to experience true Texas BBQ and Texas friendly service. Brisket so tender and moist I almost shed a tear. Great sides. Excellent service and atmosphere. See y’all soon!

    K R , 2 years ago
  44. Delicious food! I had the fried shrimp, Mac and cheese, and green beans. Everything was hot and fresh, and the macaroni was cooked perfect! The fries were also great. I will definitely be coming back to try the more cajon food!

    Sommer L. , 2 years ago
  45. Ordered to-go, and the food was AMAZING! Highly recommend the spicy corn, and the cherry cobbler is one of the best I’ve ever tasted! Jalapeño sausage was ON POINT and the ribs were perfectly tender. Excellent lunch.

    Leah D. , 2 years ago
  46. A Spicewood icon. Pit bbq. You choose your meat from the pit. The pinto beans and on certain days the butter beans come with the meat. Of course so do pickles onions bread and jalapenos.

    Bracin K. , 2 years ago
  47. Wanted to take a drive out to this bbq joint – the line was long but went by very quickly – I ordered some ribs brisket and reg sausage – sides I went for Mac n chz and potato salad – they have a mid area on the house where you can grab you some beans bread and Jalapeños and refills for your tea / soda – everything was really good – o and they had a gentleman playing singing and playing a few instruments it was a nice atmosphere-

  48. 2nd time here. This BBQ is 10/10. My wife and I struggle to go back to any other BBQ after having Opie’s. Nice and clean inside. Fast service even on Saturday at noon. Lots of veriety. Best Texas BBQ hands down. Always worth the drive.

    Frank M. , 2 years ago
  49. WOW … INCREDIBLE.. I could say more. The Austin area has so many wonderful barbecue spots. 10 years it took me to actually sit down and enjoy hot food. I can recommend the brisket, sweet n spicy ribs, tater tot casserole and blackberry cobbler. My wife were restrained in not overeating even though I cod easily.

  50. I stopped here with my brother in law on a Sunday for lunch. As you approach from the parking lot you can smell the smoke …
When you walk in you are at the smoker area, and their staff helps you to get the meats that you desire. We had a chopped beef sandwich and a brisket sandwich. Then you have the staff provide you with their sides….I had the coleslaw and he had the tater tot casserole. I ordered the Key Lime Pie.They also have all the fixin’s: onions, pickles, white bread, beans, sauce Etc… help yourself to all the beans that you want!
I enjoyed the smoky and very tender meats, my coleslaw was good, and the key lime pie was exceptional! My brother-in-law enjoyed his chopped beef sandwich and tater tot casserole, too. Total for 2 sandwiches, two sides, a soft drink and a piece of pie was $33.49 before tip, a fair value.
The restaurant is clean and well organized, on weekends he has some low-key entertainment, and it’s a very Hill Country crowd. Overall I really enjoyed this and would strongly recommend Opies for some good barbecue.
… recently stopped in and got the pork ribs, cole slaw, tater tots casserole, Mac and cheese and a large chopped beef sandwich. All delicious. See pics.

Vegetarian options: They have veggies but it’s a BBQ joint…

Kid-friendliness: Family friendly, comfortable seating, all-you-can drink sodas and teas, and beans.

    Mark O. , 3 years ago
  51. I went in for a to go order they have one of the best brisket sandwiches around. Talk about tender and the flavor was banging. I have to go back soon this time I’ll be sitting.

    Curtis W. , 3 years ago
  52. Nice stop for some BBQ while hitting up the sites along the south side of the Colorado River and Lake Travis. Friendly service and large open dining area. Beans, BBQ sauce, and bread pickles and onions in the middle of restaurant near the drinks. Got some brisket, ribs, and jalapeno cheddar sausage. Loved the green beans and spicy corn.

    Errol O. , 3 years ago
  53. Excellent food! Tender, juicy brisket; potato salad and tater tot casserole, beans, cobblers. The brisket is some of the best I’ve had. Stop for a tasty treat!

    John A. , 4 years ago
  54. Make the drive, it’s worth it!
Good seasoned pit & the meat is rarely rushed.
I’ve always been a fan of there beef rib, sausage, tat-or-tot casserole & jalapeño cream corn, regular menu items that have stood the test of time with me. (Been eating here since they were around the corner on the spur, I thought then, that I had a secret little bbq spot that no Austinites knew of. Kinda did but not really, or least not for long.)
Friday’s is butter bean day, so if you only plan on going once, make it a Friday.

    Jerry W. , 4 years ago
  55. We stop every chance we get! The meats are always delicious. The spicy corn side dish is a must have! I like my brisket with potato salad, pickles and jalapeños. The only thing I don’t love is the potato salad. I’d knock off a star but the rest is so good it makes up for it. The butter beans of course are a real treat. And of course the peach cobbler!

    Jennifer K , 4 years ago
  56. It’s hard to stand out in the bbq world when you’re in epicenter of all great bbq; opie’s is a strong contender because it’s so well rounded (just as well rounded as I will be if I could eat there as often as I would like). The meats are well smoked and fall off the bone tender. We got a chopped brisket sandwich, a pork sandwich, 1/2 rack of baby back ribs and a smoke jalapeño and cheese sausage. Everything was moist and delicious. There are sides galore! This is where opie’s shine since they do both the bbq AND the sides amazingly well. I *almost* ordered all the sides. There’s also free buttered beans, onions, pickles, pickled jalapeños and of course bread! For those of you who still have room, they have at least four different dessert options. I don’t have a sweet tooth, so I did not order any. There’s plenty of seating. I saw this family picnicking outside on the grass which is a super cute idea! The staff are quick and friendly. I’ll be back if I need a bbq fix

  57. Recently made my first trip to Texas for work (Ford Bronco Off-Roadeo) and pleasure back end on May 2021. On my way from Austin to Horseshoe Bay I stopped for lunch at Opie’s, and if you haven’t been you should! Best BBQ I have ever tasted. Up in Massachusetts we don’t have too many decent BBQ places, if we do its either way over smoked or over seasoned. Opie’s NAILED IT! I had the Brisket, Ribs, Tater Tot Casserole, Cole Slaw and Cherry Cobbler and cleaned my plate…..oh and washed it down with real sweet tea. If your in the area of Spicewood, TX you have to make a point to stop here. I have already booked a second trip to Horseshoe Bay for 2022 and on our way this WILL be our stop for lunch/dinner. Thanks Opie’s for a great first impression of Texas!

    Derek B. , 4 years ago
  58. Wow, this authentic Texas Barbeque restaurant is one of the best places I have ever eaten at. Not just the barbeque but everything is homemade and delicious. Right when you walk in the front door there is a huge smoker full of barbecue. You can look at all the barbeque and select what you want or what piece you want. The sweet tea is the best I have ever had at a restaurant. The service is amazing and the staff is so friendly and helpful. Make sure you arrive early because they will run out of barbeque and then have to close. Next time you’re driving through the Texas Hill Country, do yourself a favor and stop by Opie’s Barbeque. You will be glad you did!

  59. If you want some hometown BBQ, OPIES IS THE PLACE TO GO!
Best Butter Beans! Loved the Brisket! Nice bark on it, very moist. The smoked turkey was wonderful, also very moist. Great Ribs and sausages. The pepper jack, jalapeno sausage was superb! This is definitely a stopping place is your outside of Marble Falls!

    Claudie B. , 4 years ago
  60. Passed by Opies BBQ after spending a few hours at Krause Springs and opening up quite the appetite. You immediately get into a line to make your meat selections where they cut, plate, weigh and wrap everything up for you. We got a half rack of baby back ribs, jalapeño cheese sausage, pork loin, and the highly recommended tater tot casserole. The ribs were tender & tasty, the sausage flavorful, the pork loin was good but a bit dry, and the tater tot casserole was the absolute highlight of our meal. It is 100% worth all the rave. I will purposely drive out of my way to come back for an extra large serving of that delicious casserole. They have a self-service station where you can help yourself to bread, beans, pickles, jalapeños, sauces, etc. The beans were quite tasty! We didn’t try any desserts on this visit but certainly will whenever we come back. The restaurant is a bit pricey but we left satisfied and it was the perfect meal to balance out our day in the sun at the springs. The atmosphere here is very laid back and relaxed – Definitely has that cute small town vibe. Overall, Opies is definitely worth a visit especially for the casserole!

    Sabrina R. , 4 years ago
  61. This place is freaking phenomenal. I’ve had a lot of bbq in my day and this one has just made my top 5 places for brisket, beef ribs, and their famous tater tot casserole. The bark on everything on top of keeping the inside juicy is a combination of Fergie and Jesus…my goodness! The baby backs are good too, just a bit too spicy for my liking. I’d recommend this place to anyone who still hasn’t really had good bbq. A definite must go!

    Rene , 4 years ago
  62. A wonderful atmosphere that makes you feel the authentic Texas experience. Brisket, ribs, sausage or side-dishes, all a feast to taste. By weight makes it easy to order a sample of your favorites. Alao, find the pots with beans, sauce, and the buffet of bread and fixings for your sandwich- all included! If you have a sweet tooth, get yourself ready for the many bubbling cobblers. On vacation or lunch break, Opie’s is a destination.

  63. Happened on this gem of a barbeque restaurant completely by accident. Definitely makes me wish I was living back in Texas instead of just visiting because I would go out of my way to go here again. I knew it had to be good when I pulled into the parking lot full of pickup trucks. Super friendly service and the large dining room was filled with locals. Don’t expect anything fancy, portions are either wrapped in white butcher paper or in take away styrofoam. Do expect amazing Texas smoked barbeque, peach cobbler like my grandmother works there and a giant pot of butter beans. Be sure to try the cranberry slaw. It’s a new twist on an old favorite. They even have live entertainment in the form of a singing cowboy (or at least they did that Saturday afternoon). Dang, now I’m hungry.

  64. You can only get the butter beans if you eat here! The jalapeño cream corn was nom worthy. And of course the brisket, there’s a reason this place is well known.

  65. Good BBQ. Enjoyed the sweet and spicy pork ribs and brisket. Lots of neat choices and they are very hospitable. The cranberry almond coleslaw was Delish! Many choices in the fruit cobbler. Definitely worth stopping by. Are way too much.

  66. Finally had a chance to visit this historic BBQ establishment, which is only less a than 30 min drive from the house. It has a reputation that is gravitating and is now ranked in Texas Monthly Top 50 (the most respectable BBQ rating source). The wait was fully worth it! Brisket was moist and full of flavor; had some of the best cheddar cheese and jalapeño sausage that I have ever had; and loved the bark on my chicken. I had a sample of all the meats and thoroughly enjoyed them all. I also sampled each of their three cobblers (peach, cherry and pecan) which are all handmade. Make sure you save room to “dib and dab” into these because they are also very worth the spend and stomach space. Staff was very friendly and of course ownership let me see the sacred pits, which I always try to do when visiting any BBQ joint. Very nice job Opies. I will be back.

  67. This place was great! I got the brisket and my husband got the chicken. I got a half a pound, with the intent to take some home. I stuffed in every bite!! Everything we had was great, tarot tot casserole, beans, pecan cobbler and brownie

  69. This to me is the best all around bbq that i have tried here in Texas. Located east of Marble Falls in Spicewood near Lake Travis. Have been around 4 or 5 times already and i truly can say that it to me is the best. Brisket is so moist and flavorful. Great taste, never dry and so consistent.Pork Spare ribs are almost fall off the bone and juicy same for the baby backs. Giant beef ribs are the best, get them early and whenever you can…excellent. Jalapeno sausage is great as well. Sides (Spicy cream corn, beans, potato salad) are some of the best which you dont always get at alot of bbq restaurants. This is the best most consistent all around bbq that you can get in Texas.

  70. Most BBQ places usually only ace either the meat or the side, but not both. Opie’s is a rare gem in that they are killing it on both fronts. Right when you walk in be prepared to order meat! We had the turkey, sweet/spicy ribs & fatty brisket. All 3, amazing. We had the hash-brown casserole & peach cobbler. Both, amazing. It was a Friday so the beans are free for dine-in only. Amazing. I love that they keep the BBQ sauce hot. It’s not a thick sauce and you can tell it’s homemade…no corn syrup from a jug. It is a relaxing dining area that feels more like sitting at the family table than the usual ice-house feel of a BBQ place.

Can’t wait to road trip here again and again!

  71. Loved it. Butter beans were amazing. Best brisket I’ve ever had!! We also tried the ribs, turkey and sausage. All the meat was super moist. We liked that they offer wheat as well as whit bread. My husband ordered for us – not sure if maybe he choose the jalapeño sausage…it was too spicy for me but he liked it.

  72. I couldn’t answer about more than their chop beef sandwich, but it’s pretty darn good and it’s plenty big for sharing. Their BBQ sauce is more spicy than sweet. They have homemade cobblers that are equally tasty. Pro tip: You can skip the line if you just need chop beef.

  73. Best. Barbecue. Ever.
Ribs, Brisket, jalapeño sausage. All top notch.
Don’t be turned off by the humble metal building and rustic parking lot. Once you walk inside you will feel the love from the excellent food to the charming ambiance… and of course the friendly staff and local music.

  74. Baby back ribs and butter beans were bomb dot com! Liked the BBQ sauce too. Cool wooden furniture and decor.

  75. Wow, wow, wow. Best brisket I’ve ever had. The baby back pork ribs were soooooo good. All of the sides were good, but I particularly enjoyed the tator tot casserole and creamy potato salad…

Great for crowds and kids. Lots of space. I was pleased to also hear some live music playing. Stop by and get some bbq here and take it with you to Krause Springs.

  76. I was reluctant to drive all the way out here since I lived near so many great BBQ spots in Austin, but I wasn’t disappointed. It’s pretty cool walking in and commit face to face with a giant pit of smoked meat. A notch or two below some the heavy hitters in Austin, but still really good stuff. The free beans (I was lucky to come in when they had the pinto and butter beans) are probably some of the best BBQ sides I’ve had.
