Don Mario, a Lake Travis Mexican restaurant, offers authentic Mexico City cuisine in the heart of Lakeway ! We started from a small taqueria tucked between a laundry and a pool hall. Now we have grown to the new location in Lakeway. We now offer table service and an outdoor patio. We are still serving up the same delicious pork al pastor, sopes, alambres, huaraches and other authentic Mexico City cuisine.

We specialize in tacos al pastor, the original version from the streets of Mexico City, among other authentic dishes. Everything is fresh and made from scratch.

Featuring a full menu of breakfast, lunch specials and dinner. We feature authentic Mexican street food. We also have appetizers, soups, kids meals. We also have desserts featuring homemade flan and Platanos con Nieve – fried bananas topped with cinnamon, condensed milk, chocolate syrup and banana ice cream.

  1. Every time we eat there, we come away with a great experience. I enjoyed the fish tacos and also the chips salsa and queso were excellent. I actually love the street tacos, not showing in the pictures.

  2. Date night with my son. I asked about the additional sauces and the waitress pointed me to the street tacos. I was eyeing them already and had 4 nicely filled mini barbacoa tacos. My son had chicken enchiladas with red sauce, queso and a chicken quesadilla to go.

The waitress, Gaby, was welcoming with a smile. It was my first time at Don Mario’s and we had questions, which she answered with ease. Food arrived within a reasonable time and was quite tasty. The tacos were the best barbacoa I’ve had in a minute.

It’s Thursday and the live music from the electric-acoustic guitarist was nice but a little loud. My son is also a musician so we are probably more adaptable to the volume. We did have to raise our voices.

This establishment is ideal for large parties and outdoor seating. Nice bar with TVs. Clean and spacious. Plenty of parking. Excellent service, food and atmosphere.

Parking: Parking suitable for peak times with spaces for parties. Lots of parking available. Open space.

Wheelchair accessibility: Parking upfront. No steps into the restaurant. Spacious interior.

  3. Recently moved into the area, and this is one of our staple spots! The food is awesome (especially the street tacos) and the service is excellent. The street tacos are authentic and similar to what you might find in San Diego! Delicious! The prices are reasonable and the margaritas are strong. What more could you ask for?

    Alexandra , 2 years ago
  4. It was a pretty chill when I went in. Especially for it to be a Cowboys game playing lol. The service was great and the menudo is BOMB! Loved it and will make it a frequent spot for me and my fiance.

  5. Alright, buckle up, because Don Mario Mexican Restaurant in Austin, Texas, is about to take your taste buds on a wild fiesta!

Let me start by saying, this place rocks! If you’re in the mood for some authentic Mexican flavors that’ll make your taste buds do the cha-cha, you’ve come to the right spot.

First things first, let’s talk about those tortillas – fresh, warm, and practically hugging your taste buds with every bite. It’s like they just rolled out of tortilla heaven and onto your plate. Seriously, forget everything you thought you knew about tortillas because Don Mario’s just redefined the game.

And don’t even get me started on the salsa – it’s like a flavor explosion in your mouth. The warmth of the salsa adds that extra oomph to the already fantastic dishes. It’s so good; you might catch yourself wondering if you can take a tub of it home. And try their chicken soup!

Now, let’s talk drinks. The Pina-horchata is a game-changer. If you’re into that sweet and slightly creamy goodness of horchata, this drink is your new best friend. It’s like sipping on a cinnamon-infused cloud with a sprinkle of magic. Sure, it’s a tad sweet, but hey, life’s too short not to indulge in a little sweetness, right?

The vibe at Don Mario’s is as lively as a salsa dance floor. The colors, the music, the aromas – it’s like a mini Mexican getaway in the outskirts of Austin. The staff is as friendly as your favorite abuela, making you feel right at home.

So, if you’re on the hunt for a Mexican food haven in Austin, look no further than Don Mario’s. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to shout “¡Olé!” after every bite. Trust me; your taste buds will thank you for this flavor-packed adventure!

  6. I have eaten here several times, and not been disappointed. The milanesa, street tacos, el alambres, and breakfast have been fantastic. I have ordered the veggie enchiladas twice before, and they were excellent as well. However, the last time I visited, the veggie enchiladas were basically a couple of flat soggy tortillas drowned in a spicy green sauce. There was basically nothing inside the enchiladas. I didn’t raise a fuss because we were dining with friends. But live and learn…. The veggie enchiladas are off the list!!! Still, the refried black beans and rice almost made up for the disappointing entree. Overall, a great place for some really good Mexican food! If not for the recent veggie enchilada disaster, I would give it 5 stars. Recommend giving the rest of the menu a try!

  7. This family owned and operated restaurant is fantastic. The breakfast tacos, especially the chorizo and egg. Salsa is a 9 out of 10. Street tacos are 10 out of 10. All around great.

  9. Greatest move of a business I’ve seen. Awesome spot, great food, great vibe. Can’t remember last time I want and didn’t see someone we know.

  10. Culinary brilliance! The chef’s mastery of flavors is evident in every carefully crafted dish. The attention to detail, coupled with attentive service, makes this restaurant a true standout.

  16. I found this restaurant on Google and I do not regret it. I work at a facility nearby and I got my coworker addicted to menudo. He is from Puerto Rico. They have good food and a good atmosphere.

  17. We love Mario and Leslie. Ally is also the Best person I have ever met!
Food is Always good and “kisses” to the frozen margaritas!!!!!!

  18. Food was amazing, staff was great, loved the band and the margaritas, we went back for breakfast!

    Emily G. , 2 years ago
  19. I split the beef fajita and mole enchiladas with a friend. The fajitas were average but the mole enchilada was off the charts good. The salsa and chips were pretty good as well.

    Aaron P. , 2 years ago
  20. Had a great dinner tonight. Everything was wonderful! Will definitely go back. So glad they added fajitas to the menu. The beef fajitas were excellent!!

    Jennifer S. , 2 years ago
  21. We love this restaurant! Always have. They opened in a tiny little space and have recently moved to a nice big location with lots of parking and plenty of space for big family gatherings. I introduced by best friend to their fajitas and she eats there once a week now! The food is always fresh and so good. The service is friendly and accommodating. It’s a family business, we respect that so much. Eat there, take out or delivery – I’m looking for excuses to invite friends and go. Don Mario’s is the best.

    Julie N. , 2 years ago

  23. I’ve been a Don Mario customer for years.
My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in Austin (or Lakeway), and DEFINITELY the best Mexican cuisine you can find on our side of Lake Travis. The food, the drinks, the ambiance, the service, everything here is top notch.
During the day you will almost ALWAYS see Mario himself buzzing around the space, working fervently next to his staff.
The flavors are authentic (I discovered my love for micheladas the first time I tried Mario’s), the prices have always been more reasonable than any other sit-down restaurants you’ll find close to the lake, and you will almost assuredly have some leftovers to enjoy later due to their massive portions!

Luis is an amazingly fast, friendly server and everyone else whose names I don’t yet know are always smiling, laughing and providing excellent service.

    J J. , 2 years ago
  24. Food and service was fantastic and the portions are big. If you’re in the area and looking for some great Mexican Food, I highly recommend. Will definitely be back.

    Tabitha L. , 2 years ago
  25. I went here for a late lunch and all the food was super delicious. I ordered a lot and everything came out pretty quickly and nice and hot. I ended up taking some of my lunch home and it was enough for my dinner! I loved the flavors of the guac and I liked that it wasn’t very salty because it balanced out the saltiness of the chips. The chips were also good, they had a really cool texture that I enjoyed.
The literal only negative thing I could say was that the music was kind of loud so other people had to raise their voices to talk. I was dining alone and it didn’t bother me, but if I were with a group it may have been harder.

    Melissa , 2 years ago
  26. We ate in the patio area on Sunday afternoon for a performance for the music school my kids attend. Food and drinks were both really good. Service was very attentive.

    Tarana P. , 2 years ago
  27. First time visit. Went for lunch and the food was fantastic! Even the chips and salsa were outstanding. I had the Mexican Tacos with steak. Unbelievably delicious. Wife had tostados with Picadillo and the chicken. She loved them! Service was a bit slow but friendly.

    Don W. , 2 years ago
  28. I do not normally give 5 stars but this place exceeded my expectations.
Pros: Food is very good, all things we ordered were well seasoned and prepared, service was outstanding, and the price was reasonable. They have a variety of delicious salsas to add to your dishes.
Cons: Very little to comment on the negative

Order the taco plate with 4 or 6 pastor tacos and a cold Modelo; you will be happy.

We will be back for more.

    Luis C. , 2 years ago
  29. Went on Cinco de mayo with my family. There was great service and the food came out in a timely manner for their being 9 of us. Guacamole, strawberry margarita, and migas were delicious and I would absolutely eat there again for breakfast or dinner.

    Victoria , 3 years ago
  30. Really yummy! Authentic Mexican food with good prices. Happy we came here for dinner. Very friendly staff! Loved the Alambres. Wifed loved the Enchiladas. Great salsa. Yum.

    Dan H. , 3 years ago
  31. We have been needing a place to go as a family and I thought this place was great. It was clean, air conditioned and had great service. The chips weren’t the best and a lot of things seemed to be bought at Costco and the food was okay, but I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant for what it is.

    Steven J. , 3 years ago
  32. Really enjoyed this place. I came in with a party of 10 and all of us famished. Not one negative came about. The service was quick but the server took his time to make sure we knew out options “do you have any questions on our menu?” Very important to me when maybe some ppl are afraid to ask. The Consume was amazing. Barbados was full of flavor. Shrimp are huge. Kids meals available and who doesn’t want a bloody Mary while you wait. Fantastico!

    Randy V. , 3 years ago
  33. The Mexican tacos were made with a generous amount of bistec and queso fundido (Mexican fondue style cheese)

I’m so glad we found our go-to Mexican Restaurant here in Austin.

    Did not disappoint

    James A. , 3 years ago
  34. We have been to Don Mario in RR 620 several times; both in their old location and now in the new and much bigger location. The new location is definitely much larger. It was clean and staff very friendly and helpful. The three of ordered different dishes; each turned out quite tasty and delicious. The chips and salsa were excellent. If you ask they will bring out more spicy ( and hot stuff) to go with the chips !
We were very pleased and definitely recommend probably the best Mexican restaurant in Lakeway/ Hudson Bend area.

    K RV , 3 years ago
  35. Margaritas, food and service were all great … the music was as well … the artist even took a request which was really cool! Only thing I’d say is, might have been a little loud for the room/ space but that could be overcome by putting up some sound deadening material in the walls and ceiling … but I’m nit-picking and that’s why just 4 stars for atmosphere!! Don’t let it stop you if your ready to get your party on, on a Friday night!!

    Doug C. , 3 years ago
  36. I like the new location. Very nice atmosphere. I’ve been here twice since they moved here. It’s a lot bigger. The food is so much better and their margaritas are amazing! Staff are very friendly. I will be coming here more often!

    Jessie P. , 3 years ago
  37. Great service, wonderful environment and of course a very friendly staff. And as always, the tacos al pastor street tacos are amazing with or without any one of three sauces which will bring out additional amazing flavors. Congratulations on your location Mario! Well done!!!

    Justin Y. , 3 years ago
  38. We ended up at Don Mario’s during the 2022 ice storm. One of the Only places open. The staff accommodated everyone as best they could, considering the conditions and number of people. (Icing, Power outages all around and short staffed due to weather). They did not complain, and did an excellent job taking care of the crowd. On the review side, Good food, good service, and extra points for working above and beyond under crazy pressure. We had the Chicken Mole Enchiladas. And a top shelf margarita

    Robert G. , 3 years ago
  39. Update since they’ve moved to their new, much larger location. Food is excellent and even better than before, service is awesome too!

    Dylan G. , 3 years ago
  40. This restaurant just moved to a new location. The new building is MUCH larger than the previous place – 3 to 4 times larger. There’s also now much more – and less cramped – parking.

    Brian K. , 3 years ago
  41. Best Queso Carnitas In Austin!!! Since relocating to Austin last year I have went to many restaurants in search of the best queso. Don Mario’s offers up the best queso carnitas I’ve ever had anywhere. The service is always stellar, I’ve always been seated right away. The food is excellent and makes it to the table sizzling hot and delicious. I highly recommend the enchiladas de camaron.

    Sandra Y. , 3 years ago
  42. Love this place!! We pass a few restaurants to come here. Their red chilaquiles are authentic. You can ask for them spicy or in the guajilllo(non spicy) sauce. Their Al pastor street tacos are amazing (my favorite) but when I’m not too hungry their regular Al pastor or carnitas taco are just as good and filling too. They have a variety of salsas for their tacos too. Yummm!! For something different and delicious too are their mole enchiladas with carnitas. The coffee with canela(cinnamon) is an option they have, which I love. All of their mezcal cocktails are delicious!! We love breakfast, lunch & dinner here!!

    Onie G. , 3 years ago
  43. This place was fabulous after a long day at Lake Travis. The food is very authentic but delicious. Portions are great. My kids enjoyed the tostadas, flautas and my husband the low carb carne asada. I had the posole. The staff is very friendly.

    Amy M. , 5 years ago
  44. The wife and I stopped in for lunch and were surprised by the quality of the food at Don Mario. Fresh guacamole and good chips. Spicy salsa and great entrees. They don’t have sopapillas, but all else was terrific.

    Adam M , 5 years ago
  45. This restaurant is a hidden gem. Authentic Mexican restaurant !
Do not miss the cactus tacos here . Its called nopales . Really good and unique .
We got two of the cactus tacos and the pork and chicken tacos . Really good.
The chips and salsa are fresh and crispy.
And decently priced as well .

    Gaurav H. , 5 years ago
  46. When I walk in was greeted by a young lady(didn’t get name or wasn’t wearing name tag.) and took me to my table. The place haves a great atmosphere and clean appearance.Mara took my order accurately and keep my drink full. The chips were cold but the salsa was good.order the Panbazo whit Azada. came out good and smell great.keep up the good work guys.

    LUIS P. , 6 years ago
  47. Great restaurant with a fantastic staff. Very generous happy hour and daily drink specials on the weekend. The food is outstanding and the selection of spicy salsas can add to the flavor of any of their dishes.

Big fan of the Mexico City street tacos for a happy hour bite. The flautas, Pechuga and quesadillas are all delicious as well. Wonderful queso with pico is a great starter.

    Joe D. , 7 years ago
  48. Loved the food and atmosphere. Local art on the walls and a very cool vibe. Got the chilaquiles, and they were the best I’ve had. The tortillas used were crispy, but not overdone. The scrambled eggs were not dry like many other places. The green salsa was slightly sweet but spicy, and the plate looked amazing. They had a few different salsas, all very good with varying spiciness. The potatoes were not as crispy as I would have liked, but still were well seasoned and tasty.

    Jeremiah G. , 7 years ago
  49. Food and service were excellent!! Thank you for delivering authentic Mexican food to Austin. Service was great too

Lisa Furstenfeld , 7 years ago
  50. Absolutely amazing establishment. As a native of México, the selection and quality of the food was incredible. The hospitality was beyond words. Thank you! Try the churros.

    Hugo A. , 8 years ago
  51. Love Don Mario’. Street tacos are excellent, Al Pastor amazing. Churros are really good as well. Great service and great food. Going there right now actually.

    Carl J. , 9 years ago
  52. I visited Don Mario for the first time on a Friday night! It was consistently busy, but not crazy crowded!

This is not your typical Tex Mex restaurant; it’s authentic Mexican food, but the menu does have good variety.

I had the frozen house Margarita and loved it! We had the guacamole for an appetizer. We also asked to try all of the salsas, but our favorite was the one they brought to the table originally. I had the taco plate for dinner and it was great! You pick the fillings; my favorite was barbacoa. My parents ordered the chile relleno and gorditas with pollo guisado and were impressed with both!

Overall it was a very good experience, but not quite 5 star worthy!

    Laura M. , 9 years ago
  53. Went here early on a Friday evening.
Atmosphere–pretty basic, I wish there were more booths.
    Service–friendly
Margaritas–great! Love the house margarita which is on happy hour menu
Chips & Salsa–I didn’t love the chips. Re: salsa–the one they brought was warm. My husband liked it a lot, but I don’t like warm salsa. I asked if they had a cold salsa, and they brought a dish of three different salsas (all cold, and all good). So be sure and ask if you prefer cold salsa.
Food–very good…great portions, reasonably priced, great taste.

    Antoinette G. , 9 years ago
  54. I really enjoyed my late lunch dining! I went in around 3pm, not busy.
I ordered the posole and 3 al pastor tacos.
The posole was delicious, great broth, tons of pork!
    The tacos were great too!
    I will def return again

    Bob G. , 9 years ago
  55. Great food and service! Family owned restaurant with fresh, authentic Mexican food. Love the margaritas too!

    Samantha W. , 9 years ago
  56. I really love this place. I live about 5 minutes away so I go here frequently. The staff is really friendly, and they treat everyone like family. I love the food, especially the Al Pastor, which my husband loves as well. The paintings and the atmosphere are really neat. It’s so nice to see a restaurant represent original art. The margheritas are nice and creative, the prices right on point.

    Hali P. , 9 years ago
  57. Amazing food and guess who our server was? Don Mario himself. It’s not often that the owner of the restaurant is also your waiter and takes such good care of you. Only bottled beer here but still a taste of a more authentic Mexican restaurant. They are still under construction and the sign is not super noticeable but the patio is shaded and always a good temperature for eating outside.

    Peter S. , 9 years ago
  58. Very authentic fresh food. Affordable and tasty. I have been here twice now and I love this place. Extremely friendly wait staff.

This is a great place to grab lunch with a client. Professional and quite atmosphere. The patio is shaded and has a slight cross breeze which is nice.

    Colter M. , 9 years ago
  59. I had an extended stay at the nearby hotel, so this place became my go-to restaurant. Man, did I get lucky!
The food you guys.. wow. I must have eaten here 15 times in 5 weeks, so I tried to sample everything. It was all so good! The menu consists of a wide array of central Mexican dishes, and everything I tried was authentic, flavorful, and clearly made with love. First timers can’t go wrong with the Mexico City tacos. Nice way to try their different meat/filling options.
The cocktails. I had more than my fair share, and that’s because they were all so good. Definitely let the bartender suggest one of their specialty cocktails if you’re feeling adventurous. You won’t regret it.

The people. The owners, Leslie and Mario are two of the most endearing, attentive, and lovely folks you could hope to meet. They just want you to have a great meal and to feel like family. The entire staff is warm and friendly. I wished I could have taken the whole place with me when I left. If you’re lucky enough to be close by Don Mario, do yourself a favor and make yourself a regular!

    Erin R. , 9 years ago
  60. This was our first time here. We get tired of eating in the ‘hood.

The mariachi band was the best I’ve ever heard. They’re here every other Friday.

The Mexican here is unlike other spots. The flavored are subtle and rich. And the salsa is warm – yum!

It’s a bit of a drive to Lakeway but a pleasant one. And Don Mario’s is a nice change of pace from the C!

    Ekatarina V. , 10 years ago
  61. Since Don Mario was in Hudson Bend, we come here time to time. Very authentic Mexican food.
According to my Mexican friends, Don Mario has the best Al Pastor from the north of Mexico City, Mexico.
My all time favorite is “puerco de castillo”.

  62. I’ve been to Don Mario a few times for lunch. The restaurant itself is pretty simple. There are mostly tables and a couple of booths in the back, a small outdoor seating area, and a bar.

Most recently I ordered the Consome con Tacos, which is a lunch special with three Mexico City tacos, and a bowl of their brothy soup which has chickpeas, rice, onions, etc. The soup was delicious and just spicy enough. On the tacos I got two al pastor and one barbacoa. the Mexico City style tacos are on the smaller side, so it’s a perfect portion for lunch. I love their al pastor tacos, however, the barbacoa was bland and a little too squishy for my taste. I tried some of my friend’s chicken tinga tostada and it was really tasty. I might get something with chicken tinga next time. I also like Don Mario’s salsas. One is a cool green salsa and the other is a fire roasted or chipotle.
