Have old, unwanted or unused prescription medications collected at your home?
The Lakeway Police Department along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will offer a free prescription drug take-back event on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the police parking lot located at 1941 Lohmans Crossing Rd.
The drive-thru event is free for Lakeway residents. The process is anonymous – no questions will be asked. It’s encouraged if your medication has a label to remove it, or if you can’t remove the label, you can mark out identifying information. However, that’s not necessary.
These take-back programs are the safest method for disposing of prescription drugs because they are organized and closely monitored by local, state and federal government agencies. The agencies ensure the proper disposal of the drugs in accordance with federal law. This program is NOT intended for medical businesses to dispose of medications. Medical business are regulated by the DEA in how they dispose of medications.
At a national take-back event in April of this year, the DEA reported that a total of 420 tons of prescription drugs were collected nationwide and safely disposed.
